Probably the most diverse zone in the campus natural areas, the Pumphouse Field site is a favorite area for students seeking a relaxing hike through the woods. Starting as a small, twisting path on a downward slope, the trail takes you away from campus and into a heavily forested area. As you comes off of the hill, the walk gets easier and the forest becomes a little less dense. Here, a small family cemetery can be found, remains of the original owners of the Pitt-Johnstown land. Moving past the cemetery is another, steeper hill, and the trees once again bend over the path to touch leaves. Once this bottoms out, the field comes into view and the forest drops away to tall grasses, swaying flowers, and the old Pumphouse.
